...For the first time in 13 years, Lawline9, a free information hotline offered by 9News every Wednesday, is getting backlash for scheduling immigration law as its focus this week.
More than 200 e-mails and phone calls have flooded station executives protesting the topic. The station is accused of breaking the law by offering free legal advice to undocumented immigrants [illegal aliens].
"There is a misunderstanding that we are providing help for illegal immigrants to skirt or circumvent immigration laws," said Patti Dennis, news director at 9News. "When people have questions, they get free legal advice. That is part of what this country offers."
The outcry stems from a Peter Boyles radio show during which he accused the station of helping undocumented immigrants [illegal aliens] via the help line, said Greg Hollenback, producer of Boyles' show.
Boyles believes it is wrong for anyone to help an undocumented immigrant [illegal alien] get a green card, Hollenback said....
Immigrant and Latino activists are angry about the notion that undocumented immigrants [illegal aliens]] should not have access to information about the law....
The lawyers who staff Lawline9 are volunteers through the Colorado Bar Association and the American Immigration Attorneys Association....
