Thanks in part to the massive
arrival of Latinos, two cities in
the Rocky Mountain region,
Greeley in Colorado and St.
George in Utah, are the two
metropolitan areas with the
fastest demographic growth
in the first three years of the
new millennium, according to
a U.S. Census Bureau report released last week.
The report says from 2000 to 2003 Greeley grew almost 17 percent, and
now there are 211,272 residents in the area, with 49,000 Hispanics.
Local analysts suggested Latino families moving to Greeley, both from
outside the country and from other cities or states, was one of the key
factors for the rapid growth....
With the growth in the
population and the growth in the Hispanic community it should be easier to
implement changes in the local government,” Bach stated.
There are other potential problems, including more taxes, more traffic in
the streets and highways, and even perhaps more gang activity. Also,
Greeley may become a culturally divided city if Hispanics are concentrated
mostly in the north sector of the town.
“That’s why we need to get people in Greeley to vote for candidates who
truly want to promote equality among the population, working to improve
our community,” Bach said.
