Immigration level swells in Colorado

Nearly 19,000 people immigrated to Colorado from other countries in 2005, triple the number moving here from other states, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released Wednesday....

The Census Bureau estimates that Colorado had a net influx of 18,800 foreign-born immigrants [and illegal aliens?] from July 2004 to July 2005, as compared with a net of 5,500 people moving here from other states.

But Garner said the Census Bureau's estimates on those moving to the state from outside the country are notoriously "soft" because the federal agency is only guessing at the number of illegal immigrants included in the category....

At the same time, she said the number of people who moved to Colorado from other states is probably undercounted in the federal estimates because the Census Bureau uses a less comprehensive analysis in its state-by-state population estimates than her office does....

Overall, Colorado picked up 63,000 new residents in 2005, for a total population of 4.67 million, according to the Census Bureau.

Garner doesn't argue with the Census Bureau's determination that Douglas County was once again Colorado's fastest-growing county, with a growth rate of 5 percent.

Douglas County and Weld County were the only two Colorado counties to make the Census Bureau's list of the top 100 [unsustainably] fastest-growing counties in the nation, with Douglas ranked 41st and Weld ranked 81st.

Douglas County was the fastest-growing county in the United States in 2001....

Weld Country had a growth rate of 4.1 percent in 2005, making it the second fastest-growing county in the state, and Adams County was at 3 percent, in fourth place....

Eagle and Garfield counties, both along the I-70 corridor in the high country, were the third and fifth fastest-growing counties in the state, respectively....

El Paso County, home of Colorado Springs, retains the title of the most populous county in the state for the second consecutive year, with 566,000 people....
