Illegal immigrants said to cost Coloradans billions

Illegal immigrants take billions of dollars out of Colorado taxpayers' pockets each year by working for substandard wages, sending their children to public school and requiring medical care, organizers of a proposed ballot initiative said today.

"We need some rational solutions to the problems the government has allowed to get out of control," said Denver community activist Waldo Benavidez, one of the organizers of Defend Colorado Now....

State Sen. John Andrews, a co-chair of the group... introduced a study prepared by Donald Rice, a financial and management consultant in Evergreen, that asserted one out of every 21 Coloradans is an illegal immigrant and contended 24 percent of Denver births in 2002 were to illegal alien mothers, among pages of findings.

Rice said.. the study... was based largely on computer searches of original documents...
