CAIR 2009 year-end report
CAIR has been doing a lot behind the scenes this last year (2009). We haven't publicized a lot of what we have done. So here is a brief year-end summary.
December 2008 - Secure and Verifiable ID audit. CAIR Director Stan Weekes has been working on this for a year and a half. This effort resulted in reexamination of how to fix complications of complications introduced 2006 Special Session bill 1023 how it ties in to the 2003 Secure and Verifiable ID bill 1224
In November 2009, the Audit Committee turned down a third proposed fix, so this will be an ongoing project.
Stan consulted on crafting the Instate Tuition bill SB09-146. Stan also focused on the mandatory impoundment of motor vehicles of illegal aliens who are stopped.
Mid session 2009: Stan and a number of other activists testified in front of Senate Education Committee.
Stan worked with Dept. of Revenue and other departments on Secure and Verifiable ID.
Stan and other activists attended the ongoing DU Strategic Issues Forum in the Spring of 2009. Southers, Ritter, Lamm, Roy Beck of www.NumbersUSA.com and others participated. This resulted in a report that was released yesterday. The forum (with notable exceptions) was actually quite stacked against enforcement of immigration law.
September: Stan participated in debate with the Edward R. Morrow Journalism Program sponsored by US State Dept. for visiting journalists. 17 European journalists attended. Stan generated significant interest and discussion.
October: Stan was on a panel debate for Amnesty International at the DU Law School.
November: Frosty Wooldridge and Stan debated Lisa Duran and Leslie Erwin before Alexander Dawson School in Lafayette.
CAIR Spokesperson John Brick and Stan attended the Eligibility Modernization Task Force meetings focusing on electronic verification of eligibility.
Stan engaged in a series of discussions with auditors across state on solutions to Secure and Verifiable audit - an ongoing effort.
Stan focused on Sanctuary Bill SB 06-90 and Secure and Verifiable ID Bill SB03-1224 involving use of identification for obtaining emergency food services.
We conducted a series of strategic planning meetings throughout the year. Jim Schaeffer, Jim Ryder, John Brick, Fred Elbel and others participated.
Many CAIR activists were involved with ongoing Cory Voorhis case. CAIR members founded Cory Legal Defense. See www.CoryLegalDefense.com and worked to obtain donations for Cory.
Fred consulted a number of with various immigration reform organizations during the past year and attended several conferences in DC.
Colorado activist and CAIR member Frosty Wooldridge was on nearly 200 radio shows and has participated in a number of debates, and has written 250 columns this year alone.
Founding CAIR member Jan Herron published numerous articles.
Because of Stan's ongoing work, the application to become a landlord in Boulder was revised in August to include a checkbox for landlord immigration status.
Stan was a gust on Peter Boyles' radio show numerous times, as well as the Caplais and Silverman radio show.
