GOP Lawmakers Challenge Hickenlooper On Subsidized Tuition For Illegal Alien Students
Denver-Today, ten Republican lawmakers sent a letter to Governor Hickenlooper asking him to intervene to block implementation of last weekÂ’s action by the trustees of Metro State College to create a new, subsidized tuition rate for illegal alien students.
The Republican legislators describe Metro State’s action as violating both state law and federal law while setting a dangerous precedent on higher education tuition. The letter states that “if imitated by other institutions of higher education, it will almost certainly lead to higher tuition rates for Colorado citizens and numerous lawsuits.”
The lawmakers suggest that “in order to avoid costly and distracting litigation, and to send a message affirming administrative accountability and respect for the constitutional separation of powers,” the Governor should instruct Metro State to put their plans on hold pending legislation to authorize such plans.
