NEWS RELEASE
Colo. Immigration/Population Group Displays Second Billboard Message:
"Mass Immigration Is Not Smart Growth"
Denver (May 21, 2000) - A Denver/Aspen-based population awareness group unveiled a new billboard on Iliff between I-25 and Parker warning: "Mass Immigration is NOT Smart Growth." The billboard shows a U.S. map marked "FULL."
U.S. Census Bureau data show current mass immigration is causing America's population to double from its current 275 million to more than half-a-billion within the lifetime of school-age children, says Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR).
Former Colo. Gov. Richard D. Lamm, a strong advocate for population stabilization and immigration reduction, said: "If this billboard creates more public debate on this issue, I'm for it." Lamm added, "I know some of the people in CAIR. They know all-too well that America is at a critical time in its history and just how important it is to create a critical mass of public awareness to motivate Congress to take action now, before it's too late."
In its Who We Are handout, CAIR cites sources that predict, "Mass Immigration will be responsible for 90 percent of America's population growth in the next 50 years."
CAIR is calling for public support to urge Congress to reduce legal immigration to "replacement" numbers-a balance of out-migration with in-migration- to 200,000 or fewer per year. Current legal immigration is approximately 1,000,000, annually. The group is also demanding a complete halt to illegal immigration.
CAIR spokesperson, Marlene Guerrero, said they hope to attract additional interest to support more billboard messages throughout Colorado. CAIR's billboard follows recent resolutions passed by the Aspen City Council and the Pitkin County Commissioners calling for, in part, permanent annual reduction in U.S. immigration to 175,000.
