Colorado Immigration Group Challenges Denver's Mayor
Tancredo supports plan to ask Feds if Webb acted illegally
Denver, Colorado....The Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR) says
that Denver's
Mayor Wellington Webb may have violated federal immigration laws, including
criminal statutes. Congressman Tom Tancredo has accepted an invitation to
join CAIR spokespersons at
*a press conference to be held on the steps of the Denver City and County
building at
1437 Bannock St., on Thursday, October 31, at 2 pm.
Immediately following the press conference, CAIR representatives will
hand-deliver a letter to Mayor Webb saying the group intends to file formal
complaints with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the U.S.
Attorney for the District of Colorado, challenging Webb's actions.
CAIR's letter states the Mayor gave $15,000 from a Federal Community Block
Grant to support a
day laborers' center that CAIR says provides jobs to illegal aliens. It also
cites Webb's recent official acceptance of the Consular Matricula ID Card,
issued by the Mexican Consul in Denver. CAIR's letter says the Mayor's
actions may be serious violations of federal law. The letter cites various
federal statutes to support CAIR's claims.
"We want to know why Mayor Webb has put himself and the City and County of
Denver in possible legal jeopardy to benefit foreign nationals at the expense
of his citizen constituents," said Mike McGarry, spokesman for the
immigration reform group.
The Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR), based in Lakewood, is a
Colorado non-profit corporation advocating for immigration reduction.
