Immigration Debate January 8 at CU-Denver Auraria:
The Mexican "matricula consular" ID card: Safe or Sorry?
Lakewood, CO (January 2, 2003)-- The Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR)* is co-sponsoring an immigration debate on Wed., Jan. 8, from 7:30-9pm, at the CU Auraria campus, North Classroom Building, Auraria Parkway and Speer Blvd, in Denver. The topic of the debate is the growing institutional and governmental acceptance of the Mexican government's "matricula consular" ID Card as valid identification. The debate is titled: The Mexican "matricula consular" ID Card: Safe or Sorry?
Syndicated columnist and best selling author Michelle Milkin (Invasion: How America still Welcomes Terrorists, Criminals and Other Foreign Menaces to Our Shores), immigration critic Congressman Tom Tancredo and CAIR co-director Mike McGarry will argue against accepting the ID card. Immigration attorney Ann Allott, Colo. State Senator Ron Tupa and CU-Denver sociology professor Dr. Estevan Flores will team up to advocate for the ID card.
CAIR's spokesperson Marlene Guerrero said, "Polls show Coloradans in high numbers do not want this card accepted by local governments. Yet local governments are forcing it upon us without citizen input. We at CAIR think this foreign ID card should be debated, not dictated."
The debate is open to the public at $5 per person. Co-sponsors include Metropolitan State College of Denver (Student Activities) and VASER Consulting of Aspen. A 6-7pm by-invitation reception (press invited) will be held at the same building location to meet- and-greet the panelists, including debate alternate and former Colo. Gov. Richard D. Lamm. Ms. Malkin will be signing $25 discounted copies of Invasion throughout the evening, as circumstances permit. Cost of attending the reception is $10/per person.
First-come, first-serve seating for the debate is limited. Doors for the debate open at 7 pm. Park in Lot R, immediately north of the North Classroom Building ($3.25 per car), then follow signs. See CAIR's website, www.cairco.org for maps and further details.
