Immigration group blasts Colorado Springs library over Mexican "Mickey Mouse" ID

Says "shouldn't be tolerated for a second"

February 8, 2006 (Lakewood, CO)-- A spokesman for a statewide immigration reform group has blasted the Sand Creek branch of the Pikes Peak Library District for providing its properties as a venue on Sat., Feb. 11, to the Consulate General of Mexico to issue its Consular ID card to Mexican "illegal aliens" living in the area. Mike McGarry, acting director of the Lakewood-based Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR), called the library's action "reckless, arbitrary and outrageous."

McGarry said some of CAIR's members in the Colorado Springs area, along with some members of the Colorado Minutemen, will be on site at the Sand Creek Library branch on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 am to 12 pm (or longer) to protest and video those applying for the card, which he said will be shown on the group's website.

McGarry said the Colorado Secure and Verifiable Identity Document Act, passed by the Colorado legislature in 2003, bans state agencies and those of its political subdivisions from accepting the ID card, known as the matricula consular card, as valid ID in most circumstances. He said only illegal aliens have a need for the card, because, he says, Mexican nationals legally residing in the state all possess U.S. government-issued documents, such as visas and permanent resident alien cards, known as green cards. He said the FBI and the Justice Department have designated the ID card "as risky, unreliable and posing a major criminal threat."

McGarry acknowledges that there is no law restricting the Mexican government from issuing the card. "If the agents of one of the most corrupt governments on earth want to sell their Mickey Mouse ID card, they can do so on private property. Allowing this travesty to take place on taxpayers' property shouldn't be tolerate for a second," McGarry said.
