Here is more information on the bill, its status, as well as a pdf version.
Over the course of the past 10 years, between 6,000 and 9,000 criminal aliens have been placed in Colorado county jails each year.
In a typical year, 1,800 to 2,200 criminal illegal felons with longer sentences reside in CDOC (Colorado Department of Corrections) facilities - that's nearly 15% of the 2016 CDOC population.
Taxpayers paid over $75 million to incarcerate 2,039 criminal illegal aliens in 2016. Most of these aliens released from local jails were released back into the community by local sheriffs instead of being turned over to ICE for possible deportation. (ICE does do a good job of picking up most of the CDOC releases.)
HB17-1230 would prevent CDOC and county sheriffs from turning criminal illegal aliens over to ICE on completion of their jail term.
The bill is built upon the falsehood that federal immigration law is an overreach and infringes on states' rights. In fact, federal immigration law is established Constitutional law. According to United States law (8 U.S.C. 1373 and 1324), states may not enact policies or laws that restrict or obstruct federal immigration law. Thus, this bill represents illegal and unconstitutional state overreach.
Poll after poll reveals that Americans are opposed to sanctuary cities. Legislators who support bills like HB17-1230 are drastically out of touch with their bosses - the American people.
