Elaine Ellinger is a Canadian author, researcher, and educator whose work focuses on Islamic doctrine and its consequences - especially for non-Muslims. Her book, A Civilizational Reckoning, explains how Islamic Sharia poses an ongoing threat to Western Civilization.
Why should you read this book? Many comprehensive books have been written about Islam, Sharia, and Islamic jihad. However this book stands out as an excellent presentation of the concepts behind Islam and Sharia - an unyielding totalitarian political framework with a mandate to conquer the world.
The book is oriented toward those with a limited understanding of Islam. It is informative and particularly enlightening. It is easy to read, yet meticulously referenced. It also serves as an excellent refresher for those who have studied Islam in greater depth.
Here is a brief review of the book, with excerpts:
The Kafir
Ellinger points out that historically, non-Muslims were forbidden access to Islamic texts. Today, we have access to the texts - we now have the means and the ability to understand the cardinal Islamic agenda of jihad. It's now up to us to take appropriate defensive action. Ellinger writes that:
In the 21st century, we are in a unique position. For the first time in fourteen centuries, it is possible to bypass the traditional gatekeepers and read the Islamic source texts. This access changes everything.
Islam embraces duality. Islam divides the world into believers (the ummah) and unbelievers (Kafirs). Over half the Koran addresses the Kafir (non-Muslim), Ellinger states that it is essential to understand what these doctrines prescribe:
Fully 64% of the Koranic text, is about the Kafir and consistently portrays them not simply as an unbeliever, but as cursed, defiled, and condemned.
Islamic sharia is not confined to Islamic nations; it follows Muslims wherever they migrate. Muslims will not assimilate into Western nations. England, France, and Germany sadly serve as prime examples. Ellinger writes:
Islamic law is not national law confined to Islamic states as so many believe. It is religious law and it goes wherever Muslims go. All Muslims are expected to abide by it regardless of the country in which they reside. This law is also called Sharia, and it is not optional.
Imams and mullahs are not "religious leaders" in the Western sense; they are rulers, commanders, and enforcers of Sharia. In Islam, where religion is law, there is no separation between the two...
Most people assume that religious texts focus primarily on guiding followers, not condemning those outside the faith – but that’s not the case with Islam...
Sharia
A core principle of Islam is that Sharia underpins all of Islam and cannot be separated from it.
Ellinger writes that:
Sharia underpins all of Islam and cannot be separated from it... Sharia [is] not just religious rules, but a civilizational model governing belief, law, warfare, marriage, speech, commerce, taxation, personal behaviour and allegiance.
Truth
Ellinger contrasts Western ideas of truth with truth under Islam:
In the West, truth is something pursued: it is tested, debated, refined. It rests on evidence, shaped by reason, and remains open to revision. But in Islam, truth is not discovered through inquiry. It is revealed - fixed, absolute, and derived from the will of Allah as conveyed through Sharia...
One does not debate the "truth". One submits to it.
She observes that:
This is why so many Western efforts at interfaith dialogue accomplish little more than a pleasant afternoon outing. The same words are used – justice, truth, peace – but the meanings are entirely different. And in many cases, the ambiguity is deliberate...
When Muslims say, "Islam is peace" or "There is no compulsion in religion," Westerners hear liberty and harmony, when the reverse is true.
Law
Islam categorically rejects Western law. Ellinger observes that:
Any legal system based on man-made law is considered kufr - disbelief - and Muslims are forbidden to follow it once Islamic authority is established.
A secular state that does not rule by the Book of Allah cannot be obeyed in matters where its laws conflict with sharia.
Ellinger emphasizes that:
Islam is not merely a religion – it is a system of governance under Sharia. Until the 20th century, it was widely understood in the West as both a political and civilizational threat...
Part of the problem lies with Western leaders navigating uncharted waters. While their intention may be to build bridges with so-called "Muslim communities," Islamic doctrine repeatedly discourages such intermingling except where it serves a strategic purpose...
Ellinger warns:
What is being witnessed is not a passing disruption, but the deliberate and methodical advance of Islamic law through legal, societal, and political means. Civilizations do not fall to armies alone – they fall when they fail to see the ideas that have already breached their gates...
There is a way to halt this trajectory, but it begins with confronting a hard truth: while Islam is treated solely as a religion under Western law, its own doctrine defines it as a complete way of life - not merely a religion. It is a civilizational model: legal, political, economic, and military, that uses the language of religion to claim protections it does not itself permit...
She points out the errors of obfuscating terminology, writing that:
By calling those who fully implement the doctrine "Islamists," the West ignores the fact that they are not deviating from Islam at all. They are Islam in its fully realized form...
In other words, there are no "Islamists" and no "moderate Muslims." There is only Islam, manifested through the various phases of Jihad.
Ellinger discusses Waqf: Legal Sovereignty Through Property, writing that:
A waqf can include mosques, schools, malls, apartment complexes, and more...
And once claimed as a waqf, Islamic sovereignty is asserted to override national boundaries.
Examples in America include the EPIC City in Texas, and the "Gaza Strip" in Georgia. And of course, thousands of Mosques.
Ellinger observes that:
Islamic enclaves are growing exponentially within Western societies. They are expanding demographically, socially, politically, economically, and ideologically, while replacing native customs with Sharia. Unless Sharia is clearly identified as a threat and resisted, the Islamization of a country is simply a matter of time.
Slavery
Ellinger documents that enslavement of the Kafir is an integral component of Islam:
Between the 12th and 19th centuries alone an estimated 1 to 1.25 million Europeans were enslaved by Barbary corsairs in North Africa, while nearly 2 million Slavs and other Eastern Europeans were taken in the Crimean-Nogai raids.
(The word "slave" is derived from the word "Slav".)
The Three Stages of Jihad
Ellinger describes the stages of jihad:
Phase 1 – When Islam is Weak: Peace, Dawa, and Deception.
Ellinger observes that "Western school materials have claimed for over thirty years that 'Islam means peace.' This reflects dawa messaging, not doctrinal fact."
Phase 2 – When Islam Gains Strength: Defensive Demands. Education systems are targeted. Political pressure increases.
Phase 3 – When Islam Has the Upper Hand: Conquest and Subjugation
The third stage is characterized by total dominance - legal, cultural, and political - and the destruction of previous civilizations, such as the Taliban's demolition of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.
Today, Western leaders fail to recognize war unless it is declared by a nation state - but for Islam, the doctrine itself is the declaration. Global Submission is the goal.
Ellinger recounts the history of jihad:
Afghanistan is an example. Once home to a rich Buddhist civilization, its people were forced to flee, convert, or die following the Arab-Islamic invasions. By the 10th century, Buddhism had virtually vanished from the region...
Over 80 million Hindus are estimated to have been killed during the Islamic conquests of the [Indian] subcontinent...
Syria was once a majority-Christian land (think Antioch). Conquered in 636 CE, it became part of the Islamic world, though small Christian communities - Armenians, Syriacs, Melkites - survived under dhimmitude. In modern times, jihadists have tried to finish the job...
An estimated 70,000 Nigerian Christians killed by jihadis between 2000 and 2025...
It is important to understand that all of these countries reside in Dar al-Harb - the land of war. Western nations reside in Islam's Dar al-Harb. Ellinger observes that Islam is submission:
If that submission is accelerated - through law, intimidation, or appeasement - then the path ahead is already set. What comes next is not forced upon us. It is invited. But that invitation can still be withdrawn, and the trajectory reversed...
Jihad is not an act of extremism. It is an act of obedience.
Ellinger points out how Islam has gained a foothold in America by taking advantage of our Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. Yet Islam blatantly contradicts these freedoms:
the absence of a clear legal threshold for what qualifies as a religion has created a critical vulnerability - allowing a totalitarian belief system to claim privileges intended for peaceful faiths...
Islamic doctrine contains fundamental principles that directly undermine the very freedoms the First Amendment is designed to protect...
The 14th Amendment (Equal Protection & Due Process). The 14th Amendment guarantees equal protection under the law, meaning no person or group should receive special legal privileges or suffer discrimination based on race, religion, or gender. Sharia directly contradicts this principle...
The time has come to draw a clear legal boundary. A belief system that imposes a foreign legal code, overrides national law, strips individuals of their constitutional rights, and seeks to supersede the U.S. legal system cannot be granted legal privilege as a means to accomplish this...
Had the Founding Fathers foreseen a doctrine that operates not only as a faith but as a comprehensive system of governance, they would have set clear constitutional boundaries from the outset.
A legal path forward
A Civilizational Reckoning covers more than the topics mentioned above. In particular, it discusses historical and ideological roots of conflict, betrayal by Western leadership, and resisting and reversing Islamization. It concludes with appendices presenting draft legislation for England, America, Canada, and France.
Ellinger's references include the Koran, Hadith, Reliance of the Traveller, the life of Mohammed, and other sources.
