Some perspective on the Chinese bat soup virus

Here are several articles that offer informed perspective on the Chinese Wuhanvirus.

Preventative measures regarding China COVID-19 virus

The following article is mandatory reading. It explains in basic terms the exponential growth necessitating social distancing.

The Sober Math Everyone Must Understand about the Pandemic, by Jason S Warner, medium.com, March 16, 2020.

This report explores what can be done without drugs by various social distancing measures alone:

Impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to reduce COVID-19 mortality and healthcare demand, Imperial College COVID-19 Response Team. March 16, 2020.

We can now read the Imperial College report on COVID-19 that led to the extreme measures we've seen in the US this week. Read it; it's terrifying. I'll offer a summary in this thread; please correct me if I've gotten it wrong, by Jeremy C. Young, Twitter, March 17, 2020.

General perspecitives on the China COVID-19 virus

The Chinks in Our Armor, by David Cole, Taki's Magazine, March 17, 2020:

Today, we’re seeing what America becomes when there’s genuine fear....

Domestically, Wuhanvirus is a symphony of stupidity. Cretins are waiting in hours-long lines and crushing against one another mosh-pit-style in crowded stores to hoard products that are only scarce because of the panic buying, which is only occurring because people are spooked by a disease that can be caught by crushing against each other mosh-pit-style in crowded stores....

There’s a lot of suspicion on the right at the moment that Wuhanvirus is a bioweapon that was cooked up in a lab, but that kind of talk plays right into the hands of the Chinese, as it obscures the fact that Wuhanvirus was totally predictable (and thus avoidable). As the AP flatly stated in 2004, “Most flu strains start in China.”...

Three years ago, Smithsonian magazine ran an article that asked, “Is China ground zero for a future pandemic?” and the answer was yes. Smithsonian concluded that China is the likely source of the next major global pandemic, and again, the scientists were unanimous as to why: the animal cuisine and the country’s barbaric “wet markets” (for the record, the Smithsonian piece was written by a Chinawoman who was Newsweek’s Beijing bureau chief)....

People are hoarding like it’s the end of days because they’ve been led to believe that the world is facing something unprecedented. It isn’t. Wuhanvirus is a flu strain...

Trump can bluster at China all he wants; behind him is an infrastructure crawling with traitors who feel compelled to bow before totalitarian nonwhite regimes as “reparations” for the fact that American voters oppose open borders....

Forget disruptions in the international supply chain; we’ve shown that we can disrupt our domestic supply chain with vigor and blind stupidity....

COVID-19, the Elephant, and the House Cat, by Roger Kimball, American Greatness, March 21, 2020:

... the COVID-19 virus, also know as the Chinese flu, which to date has killed—are you ready—276 people in the United States, almost all of them over 80, almost all with serious co-morbidities....

Meanwhile, somewhere between 22,000 and more than 50,000 people have died from the seasonal flu in the United States this year....

... “reasonable estimates for the case fatality ratio in the general U.S. population vary from 0.05% to 1%.” [of those infected]...

How easy is it to catch the Wuhan flu? Not as easy as the scaremongers in the media—and, alas, as many policymakers—would have you believe....

According to their report if you come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19 you have a 1–5% chance of catching it as well....

But the hysteria, the fear, is ultimately being driven by governmental action, by fear of “what the government will do next.”...

Ronald Reagan once observed that the nine scariest words in the English language were “I’m [from] the government and I’m here to help.”...

China's Post-Virus Plan to Destroy America's Economy, by Curtis Ellis, American Greatness, March 17, 2020.

The "respected voices" calling for America to lift the tariffs on China are simply swallowing Beijing's sophisticated propaganda. China means to use this crisis to destroy us.

The virus that originated in Wuhan, China poses a double threat to America.

The first is to our health as the virus spreads through the U.S. population. The second is to our economy as more businesses, schools, and events shut down to slow the spread of the contagion....

A new report from Horizon Advisory consultants details Beijing's post-virus strategy—already operational—to leverage the pandemic to seize global market share in key industries, further global dependence on Chinese manufacturing, and reverse efforts in the United States and elsewhere to decouple from the People's Republic...

Beijing sees an opportunity in the pandemic to reverse President Trump's call to move manufacturing out of China....

China plans to target the very industries hit hardest by the pandemic and use the same predatory practices it has used in the past to subjugate the world's industries....

Beijing has a plan to gain ground after the setback it experienced from the Wuhan virus. It is deploying all its resources—industrial, economic, and information—to achieve its goal.

Remember that when you hear "respected voices" such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers or the Peterson Institute for International Economics call for lifting tariffs on China....

The Coronavirus, Ants, and Our Hard Right-Wing Reality. As the death toll climbs, we're reminded again why walls matter. By James Pinkerton, American Conservative, March 18, 2020.

... despite an annual GDP of more than $21 trillion (that was the old projection anyway) and a society-wide wealth of $98 trillion (also a pre-coronavirus number), we couldn't be bothered to build up the public health infrastructure that we needed....

Speaking of grasshopper moves [meaning short sighted], the Trump administration routinely proposed cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as to virtually all other federal medical and health agencies. Happily, Congress said "no."

Of course, the most grasshopper move of all was the 2018 decision made by former Trump national security adviser John Bolton to abolish the pandemic unit within the National Security Council....

What do we have in the way of homeland defense? Nothing much. We have a military that's great at sending commandoes and cruise missiles across the world, but we have little border security and, in some places, no border control whatsoever....

Yet the last couple centuries of prosperity have brought about new thinking and new ideologies, notably, liberalism, libertarianism, and an odd hybrid fusion, progressivism....

Why the Remedy May Be Worse Than the Disease, by Dennis Prager, American Greatness, March 17, 2020.

As former CBS correspondent Sharyl Attkisson further explained: "Italy has the oldest population in Europe and more elderly per capita than the U.S. Most of the Italian deaths are in patients in their 80s and 90s. In addition, Italy has a great number of direct China contacts. Italy was the first to join China's "silk road economic partnership project … (Italy's) deaths are out of a population of 60 million people."...

the Wall Street Journal reported on March 11:

"Iranian officials trace the origins of the country's coronavirus epidemic to the holy city of Qom, home to … a number of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects built by scores of workers and technicians from China … "(China has) turned into a very toxic bomb,' said Sanam Vakil, deputy Middle East director at Chatham House, a think tank in London."...

We can only be certain that shutting down virtually every part of society will result in a large number of people economically ruined, life savings depleted, decades of work building a restaurant or some other small business destroyed....

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released this statement regarding closing schools:

"Available modeling data indicate … that other mitigation efforts (e.g., handwashing, home isolation) have more impact on both spread of disease and health care measures. In other countries, those places who (sic) closed school (e.g., Hong Kong) have not had more success in reducing spread than those that did not (e.g., Singapore)."...

...economic and political disaster may be as likely, or even more likely, than a health disaster....

But here is a prediction: If the government can order society to cease functioning, from restaurants and other businesses to schools, due to a possible health disaster, it is highly likely that a Democratic president and Congress will similarly declare emergency and assert authoritarian rule in order to prevent what they consider the even greater "existential threat" to human life posed by global warming....

Chinese markets REOPEN, still selling bats and slaughtering rabbits on blood-soaked floors as Beijing celebrates ‘victory’ over the coronavirus, Geller Report, March 30, 2020:

Will they ever learn? Chinese markets are still selling bats and slaughtering rabbits on blood-soaked floors as Beijing celebrates ‘victory’ over the coronavirus... By George Knowles For The Mail, 28 March 2020

Terrified dogs and cats crammed into rusty cages. Bats and scorpions offered for sale as traditional medicine. Rabbits and ducks slaughtered and skinned side by side on a stone floor covered with blood, filth, and animal remains.

Those were the deeply troubling scenes yesterday as China celebrated its ‘victory’ over the coronavirus by reopening squalid meat markets of the type that started the pandemic three months ago, with no apparent attempt to raise hygiene standards to prevent a future outbreak.

As the pandemic that began in Wuhan forced countries worldwide to go into lockdown, a Mail on Sunday correspondent yesterday watched as thousands of customers flocked to a sprawling indoor market in Guilin, south-west China...
