What has happened?

A referendum - a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part - was held on Thursday 23 June, to decide whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union.

Leave won by 52% to 48% to secure what some have termed "Brexit".

The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting. It was the highest turnout in a UK-wide vote since the 1992 general election.

What was the breakdown across the UK?

England voted strongly for Brexit, by 53.4% to 46.6%, as did Wales, with Leave getting 52.5% of the vote and Remain 47.5%.

Scotland and Northern Ireland both backed staying in the EU. Scotland backed Remain by 62% to 38%, while 55.8% in Northern Ireland voted Remain and 44.2% Leave.

What is the European Union?

The European Union - often known as the EU - is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries (click here if you want to see the full list). 

The UK has voted to quit the European Union following a referendum on its membership. So how did the Leave campaign win?

The issue fed into wider questions of national and cultural identity, which suited Leave's message - particularly to lower income voters.

The result suggested that concerns about levels of migration into the UK over the past 10 years, their impact on society, and what might happen in the next 20 years were more widely felt and ran even deeper than people had suspected.

Just as crucially, it suggested Leave's central argument that the UK cannot control the number of people coming into the country while remaining in the EU really hit home...

It took the country years to join what was then the European Community and, even then, when it was last put to the vote in 1975 many backed it grudgingly or for narrow economic reasons.

Many of those have since changed their minds, with their earlier ambivalence turning into outright hostility. There have been decades of scepticism towards the EU among politicians and in large parts of the UK media...

...I wrote an editorial for Canada’s Financial Post that surprised my colleagues, who knew how bitterly opposed I was to the European Union, because I acknowledged that the result of the scandalously manipulative 1975 referendum showed that the British still trusted their ruling class.

Now, clearly, they do not...

I must say I no longer expected Britain to leave the European Union in my lifetime (and I still suspect it might be mugged). I had concluded the European Union was like the Hundred Years’ War, a dynastic ensnarement benefiting a powerful few, utterly irrelevant  to any rational calculation of British national interest...

By any standard, the EU is governed by a corrupt and unaccountable kleptocracy. It fleeces us for many billions a year, most of which it wastes on pork-barrel projects. The EU maintains no fewer than five presidents. As a survey of recent developments will confirm, all five are contemptuous of the peoples they misgovern...

You have to laugh at the stupid British, quarreling with themselves over something that will be completely irrelevant in just a few decades. Without getting rid of Islam and Muslims from their country–which they’ll never do–whether or not the UKistan exits from the European Union (EU) just doesn’t matter. Brexit is meaningless without Islamexit...

But that’s not what Great Britain–soon to be Greater Arabia Britain–is doing. Its people are bickering about whether or not they should remain in the neo-Marxist, Third-World-pandering EU. And while Brits should support the Brexit, none of it matters anymore. It’s too late. Too damn late...

Proponents of Brexit cite the EU’s lax immigration policies. They point out that Brexit has allowed Europe to be invaded by millions of Muslims and that anyone can go back and forth between European countries without a visa. Well, here’s a tip: Britain has already been raped and pillaged–literally and figuratively–by Islam and Muslims, by Muslim immigrants, who are mostly on the dole from public assistance gladly provided by the UK. And we know that the vast majority of those Muslims are extremists who support jihad. After all, Islam is extreme. It supports jihad. There are no “moderates” there and none in the Muslim community in the UK...

There is not Brexit without an Islamexit. And it’s too late for that.

Britain has a well-documented history of standing defiantly against tyrannical continental empires. We defeated the Spanish Armada, Napoleon, the Kaiser and Hitler. We were a bulwark against the USSR during the Cold War. Compared to all that, the low-energy efforts of crusty octogenarian globalists like George Soros were a walk into the park...

Trump, of course, is the American version of Brexit. Little wonder that he both predicted a leave vote and, unlike Obama, praised it when it actually happened...

The blindness of globalists to difference has been disastrous to western culture. The refusal of elites to acknowledge, for instance, that the Muslim world is dominated by one of the most hate-filled, bigoted ideologies in human history is a major reason for their current predicament, and certainly a motivating force behind Brexit...

...If you look under the hood of the populist revolt in Britain, and the budding revolts in larger Europe and America, the anger is in good part rooted in the lack of economic, job, and wage growth. Worldwide, growth has been missing. All the major countries have been operating under big-government spending, heavy regulations, and the insane central-bank policies of QE and zero (now negative) interest rates. It hasn’t worked. Middle-income wage earners have had enough.

Plus, wartime immigration policies have been too easy. And the major countries, including America, have not destroyed ISIS. So this popular revolt is also aimed at national-security failures.

The American election in November may parallel the British story. Barack Obama, who insulted British voters by campaigning in London against Brexit, is a huge loser. Hillary will suffer from this. Donald Trump will benefit...

...although it is too early to say #Brexit means the United Kingdom will finally stop Third World immigration, there are many reasons for hope...

But #Brexit is the most rational thing in the world. What is irrational is inviting an unlimited number of Muslim migrants and then acting surprised when things start going wrong.

The image of a European Union which would actually defend the Continent against existential threats is attractive. But what we have here is an anti-European Union, seemingly designed to destroy the culture, identity, and way of life in every Western homeland.

#Brexit is not the final victory. But it allows the possibility of victory. It makes it harder for the hostile elite to maintain control.

And most importantly of all, it suggests Western peoples won’t be scared off by the MSM from taking their countries back.
