Julian Assange has agreed to a plea deal with the United States. He left Belmarsh on Monday and is headed to Australia, WikiLeaks said.

“He was granted bail by the High Court in London and was released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK,” WikiLeaks said in a tweet early Tuesday morning London time.

Stella Assange, tweeted: "Julian is free!!!! Words cannot express our immense gratitude to YOU- yes YOU, who have all mobilised for years and years to make this come true. THANK YOU. tHANK YOU. THANK YOU."...

The New York Times reported that Assange agreed to the one count of the Espionage Act - "conspiracy to disseminate national defense information" - in exchange for a five year sentence, which the U.S. agreed had already been served on remand in Belmarsh...

Bruce Afran, a U.S. constitutional lawyer, told Consortium News that a plea deal does not create a legal precedent. Therefore Assange’s deal would not jeopardize journalists in the future of being prosecuted for accepting and publishing classified information from a source because of Assange's agreeing to such a charge...

Assange Is Free, But Justice Has Not Been Done, by Caitlin Johnstone, Lew Rockwell, 26 June 2024:

... None of this undoes the unforgivable evils the empire inflicted in its persecution of Julian Assange however, or reverses the worldwide damage that has been done by making a public example of him to show what happens to a journalist who tells inconvenient truths about the world’s most powerful government...

Justice would look like Assange being granted a full and unconditional pardon and receiving millions of dollars in compensation from the US government for the torment they put him through by his imprisonment in Belmarsh beginning in 2019, his de facto imprisonment in the Ecuadorian embassy beginning in 2012, and his jailing and house arrest beginning in 2010.

Justice would look like the US making concrete legal and policy changes guaranteeing that Washington could never again use its globe-spanning power and influence to destroy the life of a foreign journalist for reporting inconvenient facts about it, and issuing a formal apology to Julian Assange and his family...

Justice would look like formal apologies to Assange and his family from the editorial boards of all the mainstream press outlets which manufactured consent for his vicious persecution...

Julian Assange and the dark secrets of war, 6 July 2024:

The Extraordinarily Deceived U.S. & UK Publics About Assange, by Eric Zuess, Lew Rockwell. 9 July 2024:

8:00- In 2010 Assange receives video which he knows that for him to present publicly might create enormous retaliation against him from the U.S. Government. It shows the U.S. Government authorizing its Iraq snipers to machine-gun to death 9 civilians who are conversing together on the street; and the instruction to them is "Light 'em all up" then making unambiguously clear the instruction, "Come on, fire!" immediately followed by the rat-a-tat-tat and all of the targets collapsing to the street, but one running away as the firing continues and then he too falls to the ground dead. It is clearly an international war crime, and is so graphic that forever after, the U.S. Government aimed only to destroy Assange, just like he feared would happen from his publishing that evidence.

The U.S. Government has consistently lied about why they destroyed him, and so it got this lie from him that he had committed "espionage" (and got his promise never again to offend them), but this video was the actual reason why they did it, and as is clear ever since 20 March 2003, all who trust the U.S. Government believe its lies again and again and again without limit, and never learn but are permanent fools for the U.S. Government.

So: that is what this matter has really been all about. The U.S. Government prohibits the clear evidence of a U.S. international crime to become published, and demands that any violator will suffer intensely, so as to terrify any other journalist who might consider violating this demand. That's it. Everything else is propaganda.
