On May 16, 2005, CAIR held a press conference and protest at the Denver City and County Building. After the press conference, CAIR representatives hand delivered a letter to Denver Mayor Hickenlooper, demanding, not requesting, that Executive Order 116 "sanctuary policy" language be replaced with unequivocal language encouraging unfettered cooperation with federal immigration authorities in the identification and removal of illegal aliens.

There was abundant press coverage of the event. Cair's Western Slope spokesperson and co-organizer of the protest and press conference, Mike McGary. Bob Copley spoke of his experiences protecting our border as a Minuteman Project volunteer. Colorado (state) Representative Dave Schultheis (R- El Paso) spoke about the importance of controlling illegal immigration. Talk show host Michael Corbin discussed the illegal immigration problem, which is a problem of non-responsive government. CAIR director Fred Elbel read statements from former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm and Tom Tancredo.
